Injury Prevention Resources
We know that protecting children requires knowledge, preparation, and the right resources. We've created a collection of educational materials to help families create safer environments for their children. From choosing the best car seat for your child, to ensuring safe storage of medications and firearms, our resources are easy to understand and based on the latest safety guidelines.
Preventable injuries
Injury prevention covers a wide range of topics, including gun safety, drowning prevention, safe baby sleep, vehicle safety/car seats, and poison prevention, ensuring every child can grow and thrive in a safe environment.
- Drowning prevention: Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury, with children between the ages 1 to 4 at the highest risk. In drowning incidents, every second counts; it is silent and can happen in an instant. More information.
- Gun safety: When firearms are present in our homes, it’s crucial to take proactive measures to safeguard our children from accidental shootings. More information.
- Poison prevention: Infants are often incorrectly dosed with medications, toddlers are interested in exploring and mistake poison for juice or candy, school-age children may mistakenly take medication without supervision and teens are exposed to social media and peer pressure leading to the use of substances that are not prescribed to them. More information.
- Safe sleep: Ensuring a safe sleep environment is critical, which means placing babies on their backs to sleep, using a firm mattress with a fitted sheet and keeping the crib free of any objects that could pose a suffocation risk. More information.
- Vehicle safety: The risk of severe injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle crashes can be greatly reduced by ensuring that children are correctly secured in car seats, booster seats or seat belts that are appropriate for their age and size. More information.
Safety tools
Every year children are rushed to the emergency room to be treated for injuries that are preventable. We provide education to prevent these injuries, plus important safety tools such as car seats with installation inspection, life jackets, medication or gun lock boxes, and pack n’ plays or sleep sacks to families in need. Please note that availability of prevention tools is limited and subject to demand.
- Car seats with installation inspection: Our staff and volunteers offer events where you can make an appointment with a certified technician. We offer FREE car seat checks and assistance to families who may need a car seat. Those without appointments will be seen on a first come/first serve basis. You MUST have your child with you, unless you are an expectant parent. To book an appointment, you can sign up or call 682-885-2634.
- Gun safety tools: Safe storage of guns includes storing guns in a gun safe and away from ammunition. Contact us to request a gun safe.
- Life jackets/water safety tools: Did you know that children age 1-4 are most at risk for drowning? Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for this age group. Join our Water Safety Club to access free resources, such as life jackets, water safety lessons and non-certified CPR lessons.
- Poison prevention tools: Medication safety starts with prevention and includes safe dosing, safe storage and safe disposal. Contact us to request a medication lock box.
- Safe baby sleep tools: Keeping babies safe in the sleep environment is easy to do. We may be able to offer assistance for those in need of safe sleep resources.
